FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Thank you Gentle Dragonheart for this list.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. I have a problem with teleporting, items not rezzing, or avatars not rezzing.
Check your connection, is your internet speed ok? Can you reach websites without delays?
Check your viewer settings: is your draw distance not set too high? For normal use, 100 metres is high enough, you can raise it once everything around you has rezzed
If that does not solve it: deep clean your cache. Opensim works different from SL here. For Secondlife, cleaning you cache is generally not advised. For Opensim, it's very needed on a regular basis, and even more often if you visit other grids (this is called “Hypergridding”) a lot, play avatars on different grids, or use your viewer to access both SecondLife and Opensim. Here are the steps to do it right:
1. Go to Avatar – Preferences – and open the “Network and Files” tab. Click the “Directories” tab there.
2. You will see the text “cache location” and below that, a local file on your computer is specified. Usually something like this: C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\Firestorm_x64\
3. Next to the cache file location is a buton labelled “Open”. Click it, and it will open that folder on your hard disk.
4. Now log out of Firestorm but KEEP THE FOLDER OPEN on your hard disk.
5. Once Firestorm is fully logged out, select everything in the folder you just opened (click the first item, scroll down the list and click the last item while holding your SHIFT key, it will select the whole list)
6. Click your “delete” key.
7. Log back in with Firestorm
You will notice things rezz slower, at first. This is normal because your cache, where your computer saves all the textures etc. You have seen before in Opensim, is empty so it has to store them again.
8. BUT once everything around you IS rezzed.. your teleport, rezzing and avatar not rezzing problems will most likely be: solved!
2. I bought a house and rezzed it on my land, but when I click the door to open it, I get an error message “this object is not for sale”.
This happens a lot, and it's very easy to solve.
Rightclick the house and choose “edit”
about halfway the window that appears, you will see “Click to: “
next to that is a pulldown menu. Click it, and choose “touch”. If it already says touch, choose something else like “buy”, then repeat the procedure and choose “touch”.
Close the edit window
Your doors should now open normally when clicked. If not:
Rightclick the house and choose “edit”.
In the edit window choose the last tab labelled “Content”
In that “content” tab there is a button (next to “Permissions”) called “reset scripts”
Click the “reset scripts” button
close the edit window, your doors should now work.
If you get an error message saying there are no scripts in the object: I am sorry, your doors are not scripted and will never open Get a house with scripted doors, or edit the doors to be phantom so you can walk through them (basic building knowledge required)
3. I made an account and was given a land parcel, but every time I log in I end up on Welcome Island. I want to go home!
You forgot to set home to your land. If you remember where your home is: fly or teleport there. If not: ask Safine or ZuZu to teleport you to your land.
Once you are at your land: Choose “world” from the top menu in your viewer and select “Set home to here”.
Now you can log in at your home!
4. My avatar takes forever to rez and everything is very slow for me. Is this a bad grid?
No, it's not. Friends Grid runs on very powerful, fast servers and when you regularly deep clean your cache and have your viewer set up correctly, you will experience little to no lag and rezzing issues. See question 1. In addition to the information there: Make sure you use a version of Firestorm that works with your computer. For older computers/graphics cards, switching to a non PBR viewer often works a lot better. You can download it here: https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/fs_older_downloads
5. Any other issues?
Use the Friends Grid group to ask other residents, most are very willing to help if Safine or ZuZu are not around.
