Ghosting, or showing a friend as online when they are not, is a known and long-standing issue in OpenSim and Second Life. It is often a communication problem between the viewer and the server, where the online status of a user is not being correctly updated.
Here are the main causes for this issue:
- Server-side glitches. The online status of avatars is maintained by the grid's servers. Sometimes, a server can fail to update or clear the status for a user who has logged out, causing their last known status to persist.
- Regional restarts. In some cases, a regional or simulator restart can cause the online status for all friends to be reset or incorrectly displayed. Logging into another, recently-restarted region often clears up the issue.
- Network or connection issues. Communication problems can happen on either the grid's side or your own. Your home network's router, modem, or even a wireless connection can sometimes interfere with the data transfer, causing information like friend status to be outdated.
- Client-side cache problems. Outdated or corrupted data in the Firestorm viewer's cache can also be the culprit. Clearing the cache forces the viewer to fetch fresh information from the server upon your next login.
- Permissions bugs. In rare instances, bugs related to friend permissions can cause status issues. Toggling and then re-applying the "See my online status" permission for a specific friend may sometimes resolve the problem.
How to troubleshoot ghosting
- Re-log or teleport. A common and simple fix is to teleport to a different, less-populated region and then re-log. This can force a refresh of the friends list.
- Reboot your network hardware. Unplugging and replugging your modem and router can clear up many communication issues on your end.
- Clear your cache. Use the options in the Firestorm viewer's settings to clear your cache.
- Ask for a region restart. If you believe the problem is with a specific region, you can contact the grid's support team and ask for the region to be restarted.
- Message the friend. Sometimes, the act of sending an instant message will "break" the ghosting effect and force the status to update correctly.
